Character Name: Arlen Arkenstone
Brief Physical Description: Arlen is average height and lean build but his age is hard to guess, anywhere from mid 30's but seen too much to late 40's but in good shape. He has long hair mostly pulled back and glasses, and his skin and hair have a gold almost faintly metallic sheen. His irises are as black as his pupils, so it's a little hard to read his eyes. He does not express emotion much. Arlen wears suits and gloves in unfamiliar places. His hands and halfway up his forearms are prosthetics of glass and metal with bone fingers. His blood is liquid philosopher's gold and the veins show through the glass. His heart is black glass set into his chest, externally visible.
Brief Personality Description: Most of the time Arlen is very distant and calm and emotionless. He does not understand people well and has almost no sexual interest. When he's talking he sometimes pauses at random because his brain isn't paying all that much attention to what he's saying. If somebody gets him on the topic of his alchemaical research then he seems to come to life because that is where all his passion and thought is, and he gets very excited about it and talks quickly. It frustrates him a little that his explanations usually don't make sense to other people.
Brief History of Character: Arlen comes from a world where there was a kind of almost-apocalypse and only a fraction of the population remains. All their memories of before whatever happened are fuzzy and Arlen remembers more then most people, but still is vague on details. He had a partner named Einrich Gerstotten and they agreed to practice alchemy on each other. They were separated just before the semi-apocalypse and Arlen has been looking for him ever since.
Brief Narrative Involving Character: In a way Arlen is glad that no one understands his grand quest. Einrich was the only one who ever understood and that makes him worth searching for. They were each others experiment, investment, confidant. They were partners. They were not friends.
Arlen isn’t sure why everyone gets an awkward moment when he says he’s looking for his partner. Arlen’s never really been interested in romance, and Einrich always seemed to have a girl or three but they never meant anything to him. Einrich didn’t even like Arlen and from the time they first met until they were almost out of school, Arlen had a string of bloody noses and black eyes and once or twice a broken bone. Einrich and Arlen hated each other. They couldn’t agree on anything. The only idea they shared was that the pursuit of something grander, the quest itself, could transmute the quaestor into someone they could never be otherwise. Together they shared one dream, arguing all the way.
Without Einrich, Arlen feels incomplete, an abandoned project. Every year he feels a little worse, like a city building left in disrepair. Without Einrich he will eventually fall apart, so he looks for him.
Only the quest matters.
